This year provided a splendid chance of having another look at The Perseids. The swarm’s maximum all but coincided with the New Moon, resulting in the absence of interfering moonlight. And the sky was cloudless into the bargain. This picture was taken 13 August at 00;54 2010, A.M. But many more beautiful and often very clear Perseids could be spotted.

Zoals jullie in het Schotelbulletin van 6 juni 2010 hebben kunnen lezen was ik onlangs in Litouwen. In genoemd bulletin beschreef ik mijn bezoek aan het ‘Molėtų Astronomijos Observatorija’(MAO). In het verslag noemde ik ook dat het nabij gelegen ‘Lietuvos etnokosmologijos muziejus’ een bezoek waard is. Omdat het niet paste in mijn vorige artikel heb ik toen geen foto’s opgenomen. In dit bulletin toon ik daarom, voor de liefhebbers, alsnog een paar foto’s van dat museum. Het ‘Ethno kosmologisch museum’ te Kulionys is slechts een paar honderd meter verwijderd van het MAO observatorium. En ligt een aantal kilometers buiten de plaats Molėtai. Dat ligt op haar beurt op ongeveer 70 km ten noorden van de hoofdstad Vilnius. Het museum is bereikbaar vanaf de doorgaande weg A14 van Vilnius naar Utena.

Regelmatig wordt er in het bulletin geschreven over bezoeken aan de Dwingeloo telescoop. Op 8 juli j.l. hebben Frans (PA0FVE), Chris (PA3GZK), Maarten (ON9MAR) en GerritJan (PA0GJH) een bezoek gebracht aan de radiosterrenwacht in Westerbork - en uiteraard ook de Dwingeloo telscoop. Ze werden rondgeleid door Hans (PA3ELR). Een paar foto’s van Gerrit Jan Huisman:

Regular Schotel-bulletin-readers will know how, on my travels, I try to visit telescopes. Last year, for instance I visited the Ventspils (Letland/Latvia) telescope and recently, with the Isaac Newton Group, the MAGIC telescopes at La Palma. In the timespan of Sunday 9 through Friday 14 May 2010, I was in Lithuania. A firstclass opportunity indeed of visiting the optical Molétai telescope. This observatory is part of the faculty “Theoretical Physics and Astronomy” of Vilnius University. The place of Morétai is situated at about 70 km north of the capital of Vilnius. The observatory on Kaldiniai hill near Kulionys is a number of kms away from Morétai. It can be reached from the direct road A14 from Vilnius to Utena. In 1969 the observatory was moved from Vilnius to its present location. In the course of time, in its former location near Vilnius-park, where it had been built in 1921, it had to cope with lightpolution more and more. The original observations in Vilnius were started as early as 1735. It consequently has an impressive record.

Here you’ll find a rather big corner-antenna. The man in the white coat in the picture was ir. Houtgast. He can be recognized by his always featuring an Basque beret. |
