This is an example of how the general public can participate in scientific research without being a specialist. A recent example of how this can lead to a major discovery is the Dutch teacher Hanny van Arkel. Hanny discovered a strange object that is now officially called "Hanny's voorwerp". The Hubble telescope is scheduled to take a closer look at this object in 2009.
