On Thursday morning, June the 3rd, 17 pupils together with five adults from primary school "De Woldschool", located in Steenwijkerwold, visited the Dwingeloo telescope. After listening to an explanation on how a radio telescope receives radio signals from the sky, the pupils went inside to continue the tour at the drive mechanism of the telescope. Then they went outside again to see how the telescope moved to point to a celestial radio source. Inside again, it was explained to them how the reception of the radio signals works, and they could listen to the ticks of a pulsar. Judging from the many questions, they had paid attention to what was told during the tour. After spending about one hour in and around the telescope, they left, having learned many new things about astronomy and especially radio astronomy |

Het PULSAR project Toelichting: Voor het onderwijs wordt gekozen voor het simpel kunnen zichtbaar (hoorbaar) maken van een pulsar. De leermomenten zitten vooral in: - Een ander instrument om naar de hemel te kijken (meten, kijken, instrumentatie).
- Er is meer te horen dan ruis alleen (ruis, pulsen, continu straling, doppler).
- Vergelijken draaisnelheid van aarde, Zon en deze pulsar...dat verbaast je... (vuurtoreneffect, snelle rotatie, massa traagheid? etc.).
Concrete deliverables (lijst is niet volledig): - Instructie voor de demonstrator.
- Lesmateriaal bestaande uit:
- lesboek voor de docent, inclusief uitwerking van en aanwijzingen bij de vragen
- lesboek voor de leerlingen, inclusief vragen.
- Het lesmateriaal is afgestemd op de diverse niveau's van onderwijs:
- basisonderwijs: niet diep graven, fenomenologisch, pulsar = klein, zwaar, snel (!) ronddraaiend sterretje; groot oor nodig om het te kunnen horen
- middelbaar onderwijs: pulsar = ster aan het einde van zijn/haar (?) leven; pulsar signaal zit diep in de ruis; sterkte van een pulsar; ruisbronnen (hemel, antenne, versterker, aard oppervlak); helderheid van een bron, etc.
- HBO/WO: dispersie van het signaal, gedrag van een puls in een dispersief medium; detectie technieken/signaal verwerking.
